Gerald Sim's Skill Profile
InfoSec Threat Management Specialist @ Bank of America
When I was working at Bank of America (Oct 2021 - Present), I demonstrated the Cybersecurity Analysis skill when I was responsible for triaging, responding, and remediating cybersecurity events that were escalated to the team. To resolve the issue, I proactively engaged key stakeholders and subject matter experts, while performing the necessary analysis as required in my role, in an effort to remediate or address the concerns at hand. As a result, I managed to complete the incident resolution while issuing the necessary sanctions, identify areas of improvement while maintaining strong risk awareness, and gathered recognition from global executives.
Q&A with Gerald Sim
How do you apply what you have learnt in school in your job?
To be honest, I learnt a lot of the technical know-hows on the job.
The academic curriculum prepares you for the theoretical aspects of the job, but it is important to be adaptable and willing to learn in order to pick up the industry norms and the best practices that the organization utilizes. This is important as technologies come and go faster than what is being taught in school.
Theory gets you through the door. Practice helps you hold the job.- Upvote | 0

How did you land yourself this job?
I took a leap by applying into a role that I am not suitable to join. I applied for a summer analyst role as a graduate. The role should only be open to penultimate year students.
Had I been stopped by the initial requirements shared for the role, I would not be where I currently am.- Upvote | 0

What do you like most about your work?
I enjoy the fact that I am doing cybersecurity in a global bank. The global aspect allows me to learn from my colleagues out-of-region, and this includes both non-technical skills and cultural awareness that can only come about in opportunities like this.
Aside from that, I really appreciate that the specialist teams in the security department are silo-ed, making it really easy for me to identify key subject matter experts to get their opinion on the threat that we are working to mitigate.
Being in the financial industry also implies the need for very robust security controls. This provides the perfect environment for me to learn about the different aspects of security that contribute towards build a strong security posture for an organization.- Upvote | 0

What achievements in your career are you most proud of?
In my current employment, I am given the opportunity to take charge of global level projects and spearhead the initiatives that can improve the efficiency of existing processes.
I am also given the opportunity to share the important concepts of cybersecurity to associates both young and experienced in-region. The fact that my department actively encourages and enables me to do so at such an early stage in my career makes me proud of my growth in the company.
