Q&A with Alden Lee
What sacrifices have you had to make to succeed in this field, and do you feel the sacrifices were worth it?
Working long hours. For short-term, perhaps, especially in audit where you can rise up the rank fast. For long-term, it is definitely not sustainable, especially when your health is compromised. Nowadays, I draw boundaries on my working hours.

What did you do to make yourself marketable?
Continuous learning. I am currently taking CFA to catch up on the technical knowledge in the investment industry. After that, I plan to take up some tech skills (e.g. SQL, Tableau, and Python) to keep up with the technological changes.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
I would. I would rather attempt, fail, learn from it, and move on, than asking what if on my deathbed. This is especially applicable for my first experience after graduation: being a commissioned agent.

How do you attempt to overcome your lack of knowledge in particular areas?
I either read widely, ask around, or take necessary courses.
When I join audit, I realise that the one week training given is just not enough to cover the different scenarios that can happen on fieldwork. Hence, I will access the prior years file and read what happened back then to have a grasp of what is to come. When I am really stuck, I ask my batch mates for advice before going to my senior.
I am currently in the investment management industry and I am taking CFA classes exams to catch up on the technical knowledge.- Upvote | 0
