Work Experience
Project Lead Oct 2022 - Present
SLB SingaporeMy third assignment with the company (post rebrand to SLB) is a role in project management where I lead a team of engineers to develop new products for the energy industry.
Aligning with the company rebranding, I am currently working on a new product that is categorized as a large CO2 emission reduction project for our clients.Mechanical Design Engineer Feb 2020 - Sep 2022
Schlumberger Oilfield Services SingaporeMy second assignment was as a Mechanical Engineer in the New Product Development department in Singapore. Similarly, I specialized in Electrical Submersible Pumps. The first ESP was developed by my company about 100 years ago and has since seen minor tweaks to the architecture by both ourselves and competitors. In recent years, as the world transitions into renewable energy, I have been involved in the development of new age high efficiency and high power factor Permanent Magnet Motors to drive our pumps. These motors can be used as a transition technology or even used in renewable energy applications like Geothermal wells.
My daily work includes design of equipment, CAD and FEA modelling, component and system level testing, supplier qualification of parts.
Field Engineer Sep 2018 - Feb 2020
Schlumberger Oilfield Services United StatesMy first assignment in Schlumberger is Field Engineer in Texas, USA. I specialized in Electrical Submersible Pumps used to produce oil from the oil wells. My role involves installation of the ESP and onsite troubleshooting for the clients in the field. As the ESP is a multi-disciplinary product, I am trained in mechanical, materials, electrical and electronic systems. I am also certified in the company as a Variable Speed Drive (used to drive ESP motors) specialist. My job scope also includes conducting root cause analysis to investigate field failures of our ESPs and proposing new designs to the clients to cater to their well conditions.
My daily work involved driving to the oil rigs and installing the ESPs. Once installed, I will oversee the commissioning of the system and ensure we get fluid to surface. I will also help in optimizing the performance of the pump by cross checking the pump curve with expected production data of the well provided by clients

Q&A with Chee Shuan Chan
What was the most significant event that made you the way you are now?
The first year after I started my career in the oil fields of West Texas, I got news from my safety department that my colleague has met with a work accident and passed away. He was electrocuted while troubleshooting the equipment and died instantly when he came into contact with live electricity up to 3000V. This accident was very significant on 2 levels. Firstly he was a colleague that I knew and was doing the same job that I am doing everyday. Secondly, he was our most senior technician and has worked for 30 years in the company. This incident, which happened at the start of my career, is a constant reminder that we should never be complacent no matter how experienced you are and to never rush our work and always follow the safety rules. As a design engineer now, it has also shaped my design philosophy in that every part and product I design has to be safe for manufacturing and assembly.

What is the next career goal that you are planning for?
I am currently targeting to promote to senior engineer in the coming 2 years. I have already spent 4 years in the company working in the various parts of the ESP product lifecycle, from product development all the way to field application. It is time for me to consolidate all the knowledge and work on the next step of my career.

What do you like least about your work?
Having started out in the oil field with lots of hands on exposure, being an office engineer can be comparatively mundane. My work now is still challenging and exciting but at any given opportunity, I will not hesitate to put on my PPE and head down to shop floor to join the technicians.
