Summary
I am a ph.D in Physics whose main focus was on the research of attractors of non-linear dynamics in biochemical systems. Since 2016, I started working as a Cryptography Engineer in V-Key. And soon I find myself strongly attracted to cryptography and broader security. As of now, I work in capacity of Crypto Architect while also work as Product Owner for our product components responsible for generating and managing Crypto Assets.

Work Experience
Crypto Architect and Product Owner Aug 2016 - Present
V-Key Pte Ltd SingaporeV-Key is a small company with quite an impressive product and global footprint. We provide a virtual secure element (VSE) within our customers mobile app, hide their sensitive logic within our VSE while protecting their mobile apps from attackers reverse engineering attempts.
I hold dual role in this company:
- lead the development of our product component responsible for Crypto Assets generation and management
- ensure product security by analyzing them from Cryptography and Security perspective
Education
PhD (Physics) Aug 2012 - Sep 2018
Nanyang Technological University SingaporeMy main focus was on the nonlinear attractors in biological networks. In 2016, I concluded my research on biochemical network with a publication on Physics Review E. Between 2016 and 2017, I had been working on a brain related project in cooperation with A-Star, yielding some preliminary results. The second project has now been handed over as of late 2017. I concluded my Ph.D study on August 2018.

Chong HE's Skill Profile
Crypto Architect and Product Owner @ V-Key Pte Ltd
When I was working at V-Key Pte Ltd (Aug 2016 - Present), I demonstrated the Cryptography skill when I was tasked to do impact analysis on the use of certain insecure but easy-to-implement cryptography primitives in the product line. To tackle this challenge, I proactively analyzed the potential attack vectors that can be applied with such primitive, writing theoretic proofs on certain attack vector that the rest of the team is not familiar with. As a result, I managed to convince the team to move away from using such cryptography primitive.
Crypto Architect and Product Owner @ V-Key Pte Ltd
When I was working at V-Key Pte Ltd (Aug 2016 - Present), I demonstrated the Software Security skill when I was tasked to analyze security requirement for certain assetss storage and transmission. To take initiative, I proactively studied the nature of such assets, the frameworks that may applies to it, and the relevant existing researches around the uses of said assets. As a result, I managed to provide guidelines imposing minimum burden to the engineering team while achieving the security goal.
Crypto Architect and Product Owner @ V-Key Pte Ltd
When I was working at V-Key Pte Ltd (Aug 2016 - Present), I demonstrated the Software Engineering skill when I was responsible for maintaining our HSM interfacing codebase. To improve the situation, I proactively design and implemented automated build and test framework for the codebase. As a result, I managed to strengthen the reliability of the HSM interfacing product deployed in our and our customers environment.
Q&A with Chong HE
What do you do to keep up with the current issues and trends in your field?
1. Read. There is no way around it. I also use news feeds that learn from my interactions with it, so that I can get more relevant news / articles over time.
2. Share what I find interesting with other like-minded. With appreciation, they may also know better about what intrigues me. So next them they saw something interesting that I might have missed, they will share it with me.
3. Be open about what I dont know. When someone tells me about a fascinating new technology / idea, I pay attention to it, try my best to understand it. And if I feel lost, I wont hesitate to ask questions to clarify.- Upvote | 0

What are the tools or technology that you enjoy using for your work?
Spacemacs (https://www.spacemacs.org/) and Orgmode (https://orgmode.org/). They totally changed my life.
Mendeley (https://www.mendeley.com/) is a pretty good reference manager for personal library.
PlantUML (https://plantuml.com/) is an amazing tool to visualize designs. Diagrams created with it is not only visually pleasing, but also logically clean and super easy to maintain / modify.

What is the biggest challenge that you face in this field?
Two challenges.
First, as Cryptographers, we are keenly aware of Shor Algorithm and what it means to us as Quantum computing becomes ever more powerful and practical. Even to this day, there is still no standardized quantum computing resilient asymmetric algorithm for us to implement and integrate with. It is quite worrying as we are not certain if we can act fast enough when practical quantum computing rendering ECC and RSA completely useless.
The second challenge is more of a mundane challenge we have to wrestle with on day-to-day basis. Efforts to achieve security goals often come at the cost of development complexity and sometimes even affect business strategy. Striving a good balance between security and other priorities often take a lot of research, discussion with various stakeholders and re-work based on various partys feedback. Ingenuity and perseverance are both very important in the process.- Upvote | 0

What are your strongest skills that have contributed to your success in this field?
Digging. No matter if it is product development, architecture review, standard study or more open ended RD, I find digging deep always helpful.
Understanding the products overall architecture helps me finding the common root cause of several seemingly unrelated problems, often resulting more elegant solutions. Understanding the motivations of standards specifications helps in prioritizing the effort more efficiently, leading to more meaningful minimum viable products. Digging deep into the research papers in open-ended RDs helps me fleshing out the claims in the review papers in my minds, so that I can understand better on their strengths and limitations before applying those results in our development.
