Q&A with Jeffery Ang
What sacrifices have you had to make to succeed in this field, and do you feel the sacrifices were worth it?
As a pilot, there are many sacrifices to make. Pilots are always on the move, flying away from home and spend only about effectively 8 to 10 days in Singapore. I have missed many festive seasons gatherings, friends get-together, birthday parties, and even wedding anniversary! But my passion and the joy of flying get me going and always looking forward to the next flight.

What are some personal projects or ideas you have worked on or are working on now?
I have constantly been reviewing the human factor aspects that lead to a good and safe flight, or an undesirable flight situation. This shall be a never-ending project that I will continue even after my retirement from flying to contribute to the education for future pilots in the aviation community.

What are some mistakes that you have made in your career? How did you deal with it and what have you learned from them?
Rush factor - Rushing led me into making mistakes in flying. Everyone is susceptible to such human factor deficiency. Hence, only effective way is to be prepared and constantly remind myself not to rush through a decision even if I have experienced the same or similar situation before.

Describe a situation where you had an idea and needed to influence people around you to understand, and work together towards achieving the idea.
There were so many challenging situations in my flying career that I had to influence people and work towards a common goal. Perhaps, this time around, I shall share my experience in some non-flying related event. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has gravely affected flight operations. I was able to use my idea and experience to influence the changes in flight operations and work towards a common goal. Thats very satisfying with great sense of achievement.

Describe a time when you anticipated potential problems and developed preventive measures.
There was once on a very dark night without stars, while descending to land at a runway surrounded by waters in the Indian ocean (Black-hole effect), I was confronted with stormy weather of heavy thunderstorm and gusty winds. The weather condition made the descend unusually turbulent and controlling the aircraft to fly accurately on the approach path was indeed challenging. My pilot training of staying calm and composed saved the day and I landed the aircraft safely despite the heavy downpour and gusty wind condition.
