Summary
I hold a professional qualification in aeronautical engineering, having worked in the commercial aviation industry for 3 years. Currently, I am a First Officer on a wide body jet aircraft (B787) at Scoot. My work with Scoot includes effective leadership, adaptability, complex problem solving, data analysis, risk assessment and management, team work and collaboration, time management, communication, multi-tasking and self-discipline.
As a professional pilot, I have operated in diverse settings, under internal and external pressure. Undesirable environmental conditions, technical gremlins, maintaining good customer relations were some of the challenges faced along the way. No two situations are ever the same and we have to constantly stay ahead of the game through planning and good use of data analytics.
Having had the chance to traverse various nations and witness the rapidly evolving world that we live in, I believe in the importance of keeping pace through upskilling ourselves both in physical skills and mental ability, not merely to remain relevant but to be a multiplier to the society that we live in.

Q&A with Joseph Chan
What is the most important tool at work?
What are your interests and in what way does this career satisfy your interests?
I enjoy outdoor sports, climbing, surfing etc. Sounds like risky stuff which goes against the general sentiment of embracing risk in this line of work. howbeit, where the similarity lies is in risk analysis and management. Risk is ever present around us and its our duty to recognize it and reduce it in a safe and timely manner.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
YES YES YES, always a yes! However, one thing I would have sought to understand better would be the importance of human factors in aviation.
