Summary
In SOTA, I’ve had many opportunities to expand my perspective beyond academics, becoming a more holistic and passionate individual and leader, with experience in both local and global contexts.
I have been given various avenues to demonstrate my ability as a leader. In 2017/18, I was responsible for leading the planning and execution of the theatre program during a series of overseas service trips to Vietnam. This was when my ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances was tested and proven. During the execution process, I was faced with an unexpected change, which I overcame by thinking out of the box, adjusting initial plans while optimising the resources we had. The theatre program turned out to be a success.
Furthermore, embarking on these trips helped me to develop a heart for communities beyond our national borders. I realised that Singapore’s central geographical location enables us to make a tangible difference in the lives of real people with real needs.
Additionally, as part of the rock climbing team I collaborated with Prison Fellowship Singapore and conducted basic lessons for children of the incarcerated, instilling confidence in them to overcome fears through sports. The opportunity to share knowledge while building genuine connections with marginalised communities has allowed me to impact the lives of others.
Moreover, through my passion for Theatre, I determined that I could use it beyond entertainment purposes, and use it as a method for rehabilitation. I decided to delve into the topic of Applied Theatre in my Extended Essay. I conducted 6 months of research, including talks, workshops, and interviewing pioneering Applied Theatre therapists. It has henceforth, become one of my personal aims to spread awareness in Singapore on the need for this form of therapy for youth offenders in Singapore.
