Q&A with Wei Jie Kam
What is a Stowage Planner?
Stowage planner, in the liner industry, is a person that plans containers onto the vessel. There are many considerations from the nature of cargo, crane split, port restrictions, vessel restrictions. Based on these set of criteria, we create the most optimal stows for the ports in a rotation.
Stowage planning is like doing a puzzle, piecing the pieces one by one to create a picture (literally!). However, one big difference is that there is no one correct answer. All stows are different and can be improved.
On a daily basis, i also interact with internal and external stakeholders from all over the world. It is a truly a challenging and global career.

What looks to be the future of maritime industry?
Digitialisation and data analysis are the next big thing in the maritime industry.
The maritime industry is still very old-school and manual, so there are plenty of opportunities for IT to shape and change the industry. Blockchain, smart monitoring, autonomous vessels are buzzwords that you will keep reading from reports.
Currently, I am also upgrading myself in IT tools for data mining and analysis. Besides being comfortable with Microsoft Excel and Power BI, I will be learning SQL and R Programming in the near future.
