Summary
Being able to continual learn and have personal growth motivates me.
As a chemistry graduate, I was drawn to science applications, as such I started as a process engineer. As a process engineer, I learnt data analytics skills where I wanted to broaden my scope beyond the engineering space, pivoting into my next role in business development. Looking beyond the e-commerce industry, I’m now in a strategy planning role in the public sector.
Life is an adventure, always excited to what it brings.
I enjoy talking to people and particularly conversations with people on career choices and progression. I would love to share my experience with you if you would like to find out more, and hopefully help you navigate your choices.

Describe a project or idea (not necessarily your own) that was implemented primarily because of your efforts.
It started with conservations with the Key Account Managers (KAMs) I were managing and they were complaining about the processes within the team. Understanding their pain points and also drawing good references by other teams. I initiated something similar in my team, I roped in the key stakeholders and we had a discussion on the feasibility on the implementation of this new process. We then shared it to the team for a final feedback and review session, and finally it was rolled out.

What achievements in your career are you most proud of?
One of the key achievements for me was a constant exceeding expectations in the different roles I have been and keeping relationships after leaving. Some of my bosses even became my mentors.

What kind of education or training did you find most useful in your field?
Even though I somewhat deviated from my field of study, the thinking process is something that has helped me structure my thoughts and became my framework. It has enabled me to ask questions to understand how things are being defined. It has helped me to develop hypothesis and think other scenarios and possibilities. Finally, the everyday people skills is what made up a large part of it. Through my interaction with people from more varied background, it has gave me some training before entering the workforce. Some key differences would be the age band and hierarchy, but that would vary from firm to firm.

What are some mistakes that you have made in your career? How did you deal with it and what have you learned from them?
1) Not asking for help/ guidance when in doubt: It is important to speak up in doubt and to clarify, before proceeding on. A doubt may result to more errors.
2) Busy tired is not an excuse for your mistakes: There was once that I was so overworked and I made a mistake at work. If I was too busy and overstretched, I should have spoken to my bosses about it first.
3) Keeping my boss in tabs: When I first started my work, there were moments that reporting was more blurred and hence my boss was not in the loop for my project. He was asked in a particular meeting for the progress (as it was assumed he will know since he is my reporting manager), but he was not aware of it. It shows that my boss and me have not been communication. Besides, it would have been easier for my boss to escalate any issues should the need arises.
4) Making assumptions: Communications can be broken down especially in the day and age of communications through chats, always check in to ensure that the receiver understood you correctly.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
At this juncture, I would say I wont have any other way. It is deviating from what I graduated with, but in my degree and the jobs I had I always learnt something different. In fact, the grass will always seem greener on the other side... until I am at the other side, where I learn to appreciate the differences.

What did you do to make yourself marketable?
Firstly, it is to be aware of my own motivations and aspirations, as well as my own strengths and weaknesses. On this aspect, I talk to my bosses and close friends who knows me well. Secondly, it is to know what are the roles I am looking for and the skill sets required. With the above two, it is match what I can offer the role and also to improve on skill sets I do not possess at the moment.

What do you do to keep up with the current issues and trends in your field?
The first will be the news outlet, but the second would be determined by the industry.
When I was in Shopee, I would frequently visit offline retail shops relevant to my categories to look at the new overseas items (as I was in cross border) they have imported and their prices for competitor analysis. As my categories are also affected by trendy items, these items would usually appear on socials like tiktok, I would check tiktok occasionally as well. I would also look at competitor sites to see the items they have been featuring for more insight.

How do you effectively manage your work?
I have a to-do list I create every week, with some of the routined BAU items already pre-filled. Every morning, I look at this list and adjust it accordingly based on if there is any additional items added from the previous day and prioritise them. I will also add in additional ad-hoc items during the day to track my tasks.
