Having graduated from an unrelated degree to Human Resources, I had to figure out my own journey into a HR career 10 years ago.
Most recently as an in-house Recruiter with a large medical devices company, nothing beats going to work everyday with the mission of gathering like-minded yet diverse talents to make the workplace a collaborative, open-minded and engaging one for all.
My mantra: Pursue the right candidate at the right time, for the right clientele.

Q&A with Enling Wong
What kind of education or training did you find most useful in your field?
On the job training beats classroom or academic learning most of the time, in my opinion. It is practical for business outcomes and effective for learning as we are engaged in real life scenarios and learn from mistakes. That was how I learnt to be a competent recruiter. Training in terms of negotiation, stakeholder management, time management, etc.

What are the tools or technology that you enjoy using for your work?
I enjoy using candidate management systems that are intuitive and have an easy-to-use interface. Good examples would be Workday and SAP Successfactors. I am now in the midst of learning Phenom People, a powerful tool that is AI powered to generate candidate leads and create recruitment marketing campaigns.

Is there something you wish you'd known starting out in your field? Or is there something you wish you had done differently starting out?
No; in fact I am glad that I was clueless what my field entailed, as knowing too much might have caused me to have second thoughts!
In my case, being a blank sheet of paper compelled me to adapt and change to make this career path a worthwhile one.

Speak to people who are already at the forefront. Expect and embrace changes coming out of that.

How do you effectively manage your work?
Good planning, prioritization of workload is critical to effective work management. Also being able to identify key stakeholders and manage those partnerships well. Identify low hanging fruits and deliver them effectively first. Good communication, presentation and negotiation skills do come in handy as well.

How do you attempt to overcome your lack of knowledge in particular areas?
Research, research and research. Take advantage of the world wide web. Ask people who has knowledge for their advice and guidance. Be willing to be mentored or coached by those who are more knowledgeable. Carve out time and be intentional about prioritizing the need to gain knowledge.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
On hindsight, I will probably choose a different degree specialization but will definitely choose the same career path. Otherwise I would not be able to get to where I am now (the honing of skills, the attitude and competencies developed).
