Q&A with Jake Yeoh
Describe a project or idea (not necessarily your own) that was implemented primarily because of your efforts.
In the renovation, interior design trade, it is almost an arcane way to develop quotation, it is to type via MS office, ie word or Excel. Many a times, it is dependant on many factors, such as ones skills knowledge, the grasp of concept, the methodology, pricing mechanism, manpower costing etc, so a quotation proposal deviates from person to person. We had invested alot of resources to develop a E-quotation module, which ties in to auto generation of quotation, manpower anticipation, cost profit ratio, utilization ratio etc. Already enhanced with 2 versions, pretty sure it will enhance the whole industry greatly in the short term.

What is your personal goal in your profession?
My personal goal is to have the company self sufficient, doing good for mankind and enriching ones quality of life. We need not be a Listed, multi million company. More important, the culture and values must be positive and supportive. Everyday at work is a happy challenge, knowing you are making a world a better place, bit by bit, everyday.

What do you do to keep your skills fresh or keep yourself updated in your field?
Learning from the best, keep an open heart and mind, make use of the funding available and support life long learning. I am still being awed at the conference, workshop and courses whenever I attend them, Min 10 hours a year to enrich myself.

What do you like least about your work?
The least favourite about my work is having to have lunch alone. Because of the very nature of our work, site meetings, updates, project development, most of the time, it is in silo and brief. As such, the previous lunch khakis concept is very much missed when it is SME set up and industry we are in. But we are working on it, to have thematic approach within ZLC, eg Thai Lunch outing, cook from home, potluck. The culture is very key to longevity of a company.

What do you do to keep up with the current issues and trends in your field?
Read, Read and Read. The podcast, newsfeed, social media feeds are a constant inflow of infomation. We need to sieve out what is relevant (and fake). On top of that, keep upgrading myself, remember, it is lifelong learning. Getting a degree is just the beginning, not the end.

If you were a college student again, what would you do differently to prepare you for your field?
I will engage alot more seniors and mentors, to hear from them on their path taken. Learning curve shorten and more questions will be resolved!
