Q&A with Leon Sun
What are your strongest skills that have contributed to your success in this field?
Curiosity, commitment, consistency and conscientiousness.
I tend to peg my work to these 4 values to ensure a certain level of standard and quality. By being curious, this motivates me to continue seeking for more knowledge and experience beyond my job scope. This generates new ideas and with commitment, will kickstart and materialise these ideas into actual projects. Consistency will ensure that these projects reach completion which helps to provide actionable impacts. Lastly, being conscientious means that the work carried out is done well and thoroughly.

What are some personal projects or ideas you have worked on or are working on now?
My previous projects were more focused on data science related topics, ranging from machine learning (e.g. clustering and regressions) to causal inference (e.g. ab testing, quasi-experimental models etc.).
My current projects lean towards data engineering - preparing data for analytics reporting such as ETL/ELT, analytics engineering and working with streaming data. Some tools involved in this work are Azure, alteryx and tableau.

What was the most significant event that made you the way you are now?
I spent most of my university days mingling with research, prepared to take the academic career path. Unexpectedly upon graduation, I realised that I wanted to gain some experience in the commercial settings before locking into academics.
With zero commercial experience, and hence a severe lack of career prospects (graduating in COVID certainly did not help), I took up an internship with a local agritech startup where I had the opportunity to try out different types of work, which gave me a realisation that I enjoyed working with data. This event ultimately pivoted me into the data science track that I am in today.

What do you like most about your work?
I enjoy working with all kinds of data using the latest tools. What I find most exciting and enjoyable is the sheer speed at which data tools evolve to tackle problems data practitioner faced, from democratising machine learning models to handling big data in a distributed and parallel way. Being a data analyst allows me to be a data generalist at this point in time, and interact with both data engineering and data science fields.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
Looking back, I did not know that I would enjoy working with data to this extent. But if I were to restart my university days again, choosing either the same undergraduate course - Environmental Earth Systems Science (EESS) or a data science related degree, I would still pursue the former.
My degree in EESS equipped me with numerous skillsets in tackling climate issues, with data science being one of them. That itself introduced me to the world of data science and became the starting point of my data career.
