Q&A with Wei Li Aw Yong
If you were a college student again, what would you do differently to prepare you for your field?
If I were a student again, I would at least go for another internship to experience the difference in working style of consultants, contractors and even the authority before choosing which path to go down after graduation. And before signing up for any scholarship that comes with a service bond, please reach out to seniors or others in the industry to learn more about the companies.

What are some examples that illustrate how you have generated ideas that represent thinking 'outside the box'?
I like to observe and question conventional ways of doing things. Sometimes a simple idea could make a huge difference. One example: concrete generally gets hardened after 2 hours and it often causes difficulties for workers to clean the concrete bucket/container. A lot of times, hacking is required which causes a waste of manpower and time and it could potentially damage the container. Having experienced the trouble a few times, I started to practice to place a piece of plastic sheet in the concrete bucket before filling up with concrete, and this has since become a common practice by all engineers in my workplace.

What excites you about the field that you are in?
In the civil engineering industry, there are days you would feel exhausted and there are days you would feel you are not good enough, but there is not a day that you would feel boring. Every construction projects are unique by itself which means there are always new things for your to see and learn. Construction sites are ever changing, hundreds of people come together to work towards one same goal and being one of them, you got to witness your hard work being turned into the progression of the projects bit by bit, day by day, everyday. This gives me great sense of satisfaction.

Is there something you wish you'd known starting out in your field? Or is there something you wish you had done differently starting out?
As a fresh graduate, I had a huge culture shock when I first joined a contractor and work on construction site. It took me quite some time to adopt to the working environment and eventually manage to enjoy what I do. I always wished to have had more mental preparation before joining the workforce, especially the construction site as it is very different from the school/office environment.
