Q&A with William Liu
What are the key elements of effective feedback in Design?
To build a strong partnership with your designer, feedback sharing is crucial. To help you achieve this, here are some Dos and Donts:
Donts:
- Avoid sharing pixel-level feedback in the early design stages.
- Refrain from giving feedback that falls outside the design scope.
- Dont critique the design without first understanding the background.
Do‘s:
- Inspire designers rather than educate them.
- Recognize and appreciate their great work.

How can you make your pitch more innovative and creative?
I failed before - I once faced a situation where I had only 20 seconds in an elevator to sell my product to a senior business leader. I started with a high-level description of my product, using many positive words and quickly mentioning five features in short sentences. However, I made the mistake of focusing on hard selling instead of storytelling.
In retrospect, I should have converted the features into key use cases with clear scenarios, highlighting the real value that the business leader could gain from them.

What are the best ways to create a design system that is flexible and adaptable?
Ive seen and worked on a lot of design systems. To tell if theyre good, I look at two things:
- The DONTs: Many systems forget to say what not to do. This leads to mistakes, especially when its too late to fix them.
- Clear Component Definitions: Its hard to explain what each component does, but its important. This helps people use them right, now and in the future.
No design system is perfect at first. Its okay to make changes as you go. But always try to provide the best DONT and Definition you can.

How can you decide when to stop experimenting and move on?
Begin with a short experimentation cycle, which could last for either 3 days or 1 week. After each cycle, allocate 1 day to discuss with your team, review your approach and metrics, and align with your stakeholders. This approach can help you:
- Save time on the initial setup of experiments, as setting up a perfect one requires significant time and expertise.
- Continually improve the quality of your experiments.

Youre a product manager facing new technologies. How do you make sure you dont get left behind?
Know what you dont know, and be honest with your stakeholders and management from the very beginning, acknowledging that your team is still learning this new technology, actively exploring best practices, making mistakes, and learning along the way.
Actively share your challenges and learnings with stakeholders as you progress.

You’re considering taking on an internship in Product Management. What will you learn?
One thing you can NEVER fully learn from school is how good PMs inspire people, encourage them, and help each other succeed.
It is truly an art, and you have to learn from the good ones and find your unique personality as a PM - every PM has their own way of working with others.
