Summary
I’m a Biological Sciences undergrad pursing a second major in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology plus a minor in Public Policy and Global Affairs. I have laboratory technique skills (PCR, SDS-PAGE) and self taught Python beyond the official curriculum. Ive applied them to projects like building an automated fishing macro in Roblox. My passion lies at the intersection of science and geopolitics, and I plan to pursue an MSc/PhD in International Relations exploring how emerging biological and chemical technologies will shape great power competition in the age of multipolarity.

Q&A with Zhang Xu Cheng
What are some personal projects or ideas you have worked on or are working on now?
I love teaching myself new skills. I took my chess rating to around 1500 through self‐study, taught myself foreign policy analysis and wrote a fictional essay that led me to a volunteer worldbuilding role. I also built a Python macro for Roblox using python. Currently, I’m learning the violin from scratch, which has been both challenging and rewarding. Each project broadens my perspective and pushes my creative and analytical boundaries.

What is your personal goal in your profession?
I plan to pursue an MSc and eventually a PhD in International Relations, then work toward a lecturer/professor role. I’m passionate about researching how emerging biotechnologies intersect with global power dynamics, and I also want to teach future students, passing on both the knowledge and the enthusiasm that drives me.

What excites you about the fields that you are studying?
I’m fascinated by the intersection of science, such as gene editing and new pharmaceuticals and geopolitics. I want to know more about how states wield science during interstate competition. I want to pursue an MSc and eventually a PhD in IR to study how great powers use emerging biotechnologies as a means of competition. I also want to study security strategies for major and minor powers alike in this era of heightened global tensions.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
Yes, I would still pursue Biological Sciences, Medicinal Chemistry, and a minor in Public Policy, because I love bridging science and global affairs. If I could change anything, I’d start coding earlier—I only realized its potential after building my Roblox macro. I would have made Public Policy a full second minor if course loads permitted. I would also have liked to expand my Red Cross volunteering during COVID.
