Q&A with Jia Jing (James) Boh
As a Y4 student that is feeling lost since i am about to graduate, how should i start off with my career search?
Just like you , i used to feel the same way during Year 4 where 'job search' and ' what are you going to do after you graduate?' became a very common topic that me and my friends talked about while we were in school. It didn't help that some of my peers had already found a job in Y4S1!
The first thing that you should do is to embrace the feeling and tell yourself that you are not alone in feeling this way. It is normal to feel lost and panicky now that graduation is impending.
Next, what i will recommend you is to set up an appointment with your career coach regarding career interest. Talk to him/her about the feelings you have and be honest. After all, they are there to help us out in guiding us towards finding a job that we will enjoy as well as the job hunting process.
Then, start to do up your resume, cover letter and linkedin profile. You might think that it will only take you a short amount of time but please do not underestimate the process. A lot of time and effort has to be spent on improvising these three things, where you should be sending it to your career coach and friends to ask for feedback a couple of times. This whole process could take you a few weeks to even 1 to 2 months.
Hint: remember to save your finalised copy of your resume and cover letter in the pdf format to be sent during your job applications.
Moving on, start attending career talks and career fairs to get a wider exposure as to what kind of jobs are available out in the market. Talk to the HR personnel to find out more about the specific culture and day to day work at the firms that piqued your interest.
At this point in time, you are more or less ready to start your job search! you can start by creating an excel sheet to record down all the jobs that you have applied ( no. , job title, description, date applied, stage of application and misc). This serves the purpose of keeping track of how many jobs you have applied thus far as well as to know what the job is about when you receive a phone call from your prospective employer for a phone interview ( Sometimes, job applications on the job portals get taken down after a while and you might not remember what you even applied for!)
Next, start applying for jobs using job portals such as ntu career axis, linkedin, glassdoor, jobstreet, jobdb, glints, monster.com etc while recording them in your excel sheet. Remember to apply for enough jobs, it is foolish to apply for just 1 to 3 applications for eg and expect to get hired. One should apply for at least 10 jobs!
During the application period, you should start to prepare for video interviews, psychometric tests and face to face interviews. There are plenty of online resources out there for the psychometric tests, while your friendly career coach can definitely help you out with mock interviews.
Lastly, make sure you have proper formal wear before attending the interviews, always be early for your interviews and send a thank you email after your interviews. Then, hope for the best!
I hope these tips have been helpful, feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions or need guidance for your job hunting process or if you are feeling lost!

Can graduates with non tech background get into a tech career?
Absolutely! I myself came from a economics background where i did not know much about tech other than taking a digital marketing course in NTU.
If you are someone that is interested in getting into the tech industry, what you can do is start researching on which field you want to get into ( Digital marketing, data analytics, UX/UI, Coding etc) and take some of the courses that are available online on places such as udemy, linkedin learning and other learning portals. With the skillset that you have obtained, go on and start creating small projects to play with, such as creating a website on your own for eg.
This will allow you to 1. gauge whether you will be interested in embarking on a tech career path 2. Put your new skillset on your resume to increase your employability chances 3. Have fun in learning a new skill!
